Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
